Is a Paint Sprayer Easy to Use?

Many people are interested in the use of paint sprayers due to their reputation to phenomenally hasten the painting process. While the entire idea of using a spray gun to paint a surface may seem like a walk in the park, it still requires some discipline to get the best results. Using a paint sprayer can, therefore, be easy or difficult depending on how much effort you’re willing to put to it.

Prep work is a necessity

It is an absolute necessity to do your prep work when it comes paint spraying. Aside from priming the pump, what’s most important is to cover everything within the range that might catch paint. You can use drop cloths, plastic sheets, or practically anything that can protect objects from paint particles that are most likely to fly around once you’ve started. If you’re painting outdoors, make sure to cover your cars and place barriers that will protect your neighbors’ homes from unsuspected wind gusts that carry paint.

Gun control takes practice

Unless you’ve mastered the craft, it is imperative that you practice first with cardboard or any other flat surface before you proceed with the actual paint job. Knowing how to control the gun takes time, so be patient until you have achieved the correct paint patterns. Spray at least 12 inches away from the surface to avoid dripping. If you paint too far, that can lead to overspray and uneven paint coverage. So practice is the key.

Touch-ups and aftercare are essentials

Once you finally get the hang of using a paint sprayer and finish painting all surfaces, do minor touch-ups. Check if there are lighter areas or missed spots to work on. You may use a separate brush or roller to fix these. Lastly, make sure to thoroughly clean the spray gun after use to prevent clogging and to keep it in great condition.
