How to Spray Paint

There are various ways to spray paint with each of them requiring different paraphernalia and techniques. Spray paint may come in the form of aerosol sprays or with the use of airless spray guns, among others. If you are mildly interested in the process, or if you have a painting project to pursue, here are some common tips to follow for your endeavors to become a success:

Get the right products and gear

You can start with the paint. If you are not sure of what type of paint to buy, visit your local home improvement store and they might be able to suggest primers and finishes that are appropriate for your project. You might buy these in ready-to-use aerosol cans or purchase them by volume if you were to use spray guns. Make sure to equip yourself with the proper gear too such as gloves, goggles, and boots to protect yourself from unwanted paint particles.

Proper device control is key

Whether you’re using aerosol sprays or spray guns, you must educate yourself on the proper way to handle them. For aerosol cans, make sure to shake them well and spray in a sweeping vertical or horizontal motion. On the other hand, spray guns require you to prime the pump first before triggering and to do the same sweeping motion at a speed of at least 2 feet per second. With both devices, maintain a safe distance of at least 12 inches from the surface being painted.

Use a primer and aim for even coverage

In many instances, not using primers can prompt you to use multiple coats of paint. Thus, look for a suitable primer that’s appropriate for the color you’re aiming for. Even coverage should also be one of your primary concerns as overspray conditions, or dripping are some of the pitfalls when using spray paint.
